Summer Reading Fun

Reading is one of the most important skills a child can learn.  In order to maintain the progress a student makes during the school year, each child needs to read during the summer. Research suggests that children can lose up to three months of reading progress over the summer months. Combat that statistic by encouraging your child to read this summer!

Here are several ways for your child to engage in reading over the summer and avoid the “summer slide.”

  1. Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center Summer Reading Program
  2. Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program
  3. Summer Reading Suggestions by Grade Level

Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center Summer Reading Program

“A Universe of Stories” is the theme of the Cumberland County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program.  The program runs from June 1 to August 15.  Kids who register for the program will receive a prize for reading 5 hours, 10 hours, and 20 hours.  Teens and adults can also register and win prizes.  So either sign up online at http://www.cumberland.lib.nc.us/ or stop by your local branch.

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program

Barnes & Noble is sponsoring a Summer Reading Program.  Your child should have a journal or you can find it online at Barnes & Noble Kids Summer Reading.  Have your child read 8 books and then write down their favorite part of each book on the back of the journal.  Take the completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store between May 7 and August 31, 2019.   Your child will be able to select a free book from the list on the journal.  It’s that easy and it’s FREE!
